Case Study: Grass Roots Group

Corporate Social Responsibility is a 'hot topic' in the world of business today and Times Top 100 Company, Grass Roots decided it was time they put some resource behind it.

Grass Roots' Story

Grass Roots is a high profile Business Improvement Company based in Tring and is often quoted by members of Ten2Two as a business they would most like to work for.

The role of Corporate Social Responsibility Manager had been newly created and they started the hunt for the right person in the summer of 2007. At this stage they were unsure whether this was a full time or flexible position.

Ten2Two ? Could she work part time days?

Tamie Hutchins, HR Business Partner at Grass Roots explains "It is important for us at a company providing performance improvement solutions to our clients, to practise what we preach. Flexible working is often talked about but not as many companies embrace it as they should."

Once they had met Cindy and could see that her skills matched the brief perfectly, it was only a matter of establishing a flexible working pattern that suited both parties.

Cindy started in October 2007 and since then has been very busy assessing and implementing plans to reduce the company's carbon footprint, engaging and motivating staff to support internal initiatives such as recycling, car sharing and bike for work schemes. In addition to developing policies to reduce waste and maximise energy efficiency.

Cindy's Story

Cindy Withey had been one of the Ten2Two's first registered members and had been very active in spreading the word about Ten2Two around her friends.

Cindy had been working for The City and Guilds Institute in London for the past 9 years and latterly as their Corporate Affairs Manager. Whilst she loved her job, the commute into London was becoming ever more difficult as her 2 children moved from nursery into school.

When Cindy registered with Ten2Two, her dream was to do something within the field of Corporate Social Responsibility but felt that she may have to compromise both her position, the level of responsibility and package.

6 months later Cindy was offered the role of Corporate Social Responsibility at Grass Roots, working a 21 hour week from Monday to Wednesday.

"I can't believe I'm working for a Times Top 100 company, locally and flexibly. Not having to commute has made a huge difference to my life. Thanks to Ten2Two I've found a great job, utilising my skills, which fits perfectly with my work life balance"
